If you constantly criticize yourself, doubt your abilities, or perceive yourself as unworthy, you might suffer from a lack of self-esteem.

How To Develop An Appropriate Amount Of Self-Esteem

Self-Esteem Is A Balancing Act

Self-esteem is a delicate balancing act. Too low, and you hold yourself back, avoiding opportunities and growth. Too high, and you become a jerk, valuing yourself above all else. The sweet spot is having enough self-esteem to take action while staying humble enough to learn.

Too Little Self-Esteem

Individuals with low self-esteem underestimate the value of their skills, abilities, and opinions. Consequently, they tend to avoid opportunities, hinder their learning, and experience fear in expressing their true selves. This lack of self-esteem acts as a barrier to progress, making it difficult to get ahead.

Too Much Self-Esteem

When self-esteem is too high, you become blinded by an unrealistic self-image. As a result, you believe you’re always right, ignore flaws, and resist feedback. This issue affects personal growth and damages your relationships.

Just Enough Self-Esteem

With appropriate self-esteem, you believe in yourself enough to take action and pursue opportunities. At the same time, you remain open to feedback and treat others with respect. Hence, you achieve personal growth and experience improved relationships.

How To Develop More Self-Esteem

You don’t build self-esteem through empty praise or false confidence. Instead, you earn self-esteem by proving your worth, values, and abilities through small wins, one step at a time. Here are four ideas to develop the right amount of self-esteem:

  1. Build your skills to increase your odds of becoming successful.
  2. Set appropriate challenges to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
  3. Practice self-compassion and focus on what matters.
  4. Remain open to feedback.

Don’t expect to develop self-esteem overnight. Like any skill or trait, building self-esteem is a process that involves setting realistic goals, facing challenges, and overcoming obstacles. Thankfully, with enough time and effort, you can develop a healthy amount of self-esteem.

What I’m Thinking About

This week I had the opportunity to participate in an upcoming video on author Mark Manson‘s YouTube channel. I was an extra, so it wasn’t anything special, but thankfully, I got to see behind the scenes of his channel and speak with him after the shoot.

I asked Mark what he would do if he started over again today without an audience. I’ve been thinking about this idea for the past month and wanted to see if my answer to this question matched his advice.

Mark said it’s currently hard to get a lot of engagement and growth with blogging, which explains why he recently pivoted to YouTube. He said if he started over today, he’d focus solely on YouTube or Twitter.

Thankfully, I had come to a similar conclusion.

I started five months ago. Since then, I’ve experimented with blogging, multiple social media platforms, and YouTube.

After analyzing the data, I noticed that YouTube had the most potential for success. I also noticed successful YouTubers had large followings on other platforms with very few posts. So I concluded that success on YouTube lead to success on other channels.

Then I asked myself the following question. What’s the one thing that would change everything if it worked? My answer to that question was success on YouTube. Here’s why.

Success on YouTube leads to ad revenue, sponsorships, and collaborations. It also leads to the growth of my newsletter, social media channels, and network. And finally, it creates awareness for my meditation app, Awair, and any future products I develop.

Therefore, I’ve decided to double down on YouTube and eliminate almost everything else. So you’ll see a lot more videos moving forward.

So I challenge you to answer the same question. What’s the one thing in your life that would change everything if it worked?
