1. Level up. It’s easy to feel unconfident when you aren’t good at something. For example, imagine how confident you’d feel teaching a course if you knew nothing about the subject.
Thankfully, as your skills improve, it’s likely that your confidence will too. You’ve probably experienced this yourself if you have a driver’s license. When you first began driving, you were presumably unsure of yourself and your abilities. But, in time, you became a more confident driver.
So, if you lack confidence in a specific area of your life, one of the best ways to become more confident is through practice.
2. Be brave. Fear is a self-confidence killer. The fear of rejection keeps you from asking for a raise or date. The fear of judgment prevents you from sharing your ideas. And, the fear of failure stops you from chasing your dreams.
The problem with fear is that the longer you run from it, the stronger it becomes. Fortunately, studies show that you can decrease your fears by facing them. To do this, start small.
So, if you are afraid of public speaking, you might start by practicing in front of friends or family. Then, once you build your confidence with a small audience, you can progress to larger crowds.
3. Ditch the haters. It’s hard to feel confident if the people around you are overly judgmental, critical, and unaccepting of who you are. If you find yourself in this position, it’s time to (1) tell the people who are bringing you down how you feel or (2) spend your time with new people.
Here’s a test you can use to determine if the people in your life are a positive influence.
Assess how you feel after spending time with someone. If you feel happy and uplifted, that’s a sign to keep that person in your life. But, if you feel discouraged and defeated, that’s a sign to let that person go.
